Going Cross-Border

Going Cross-Border, glass sculpture

Context

International logistics gets complicated quickly.

Different countries have different duty, tax and import/export requirements.

For customers, that complexity can become an unexpected payment at destination or, in worse cases, a shipment that needs to be rearranged, rejected or returned.

The Product Problem

The problem sat between technology, logistics, regulation and customer experience.

The system needed to understand where a shipment was going and apply the appropriate rules before the shipment reached its destination.

What I Built

I worked on a duty-and-tax calculation capability designed to apply different rule sets depending on the destination.

The goal was to give customers better visibility of potential costs earlier in the journey.

Outcome

The capability supported a more transparent cross-border experience and reduced the risk of customers being surprised by destination charges.

Learning

Some Product problems can't be understood from the interface alone.

The product decision only makes sense once you understand the operational and regulatory system sitting behind it.

Some project details, figures and identifiers have been intentionally anonymised or generalised to respect confidentiality.
